Shetland — Age 6 and under
Spring 2019 Shetland eligibility: birth-dates 9/1/2012-8/31/2014 (Ages 5-6 on 8/31/2019)
Shake off the Giants’ season. The “boys (and girls!) of summer” actually begin in the spring. And they’re all 6 years old and under. SHETLAND! The Shetland Division is a purely instructional, noncompetitive division. It’s not about runs and outs; it’s about fun and the basics.
Games use a combination of coach pitching and T-Ball. Games and practices use reduced impact baseballs (meaning, they’re a bit softer) to increase player confidence and lessen the chance of injury. No scoring or stats are kept.
Expected Skill Level at Beginning of Season: No previous experience expected, but it is welcome.
- Practice: One 90 minute late-afternoon/early-evening weekday practice per week at Havens Playfield.
- Games: One 3 to 4 inning game at Beach Playfield on Saturdayafternoons consisting of a 20-30 minute pre-game warm-up and approximately 90 minutes of game time. (Games are usually at ~ 1:00 or3:00 p.m. on Saturday.)
Playing Time / Position Rotation: All players bat once in each inning (again, no outs are officially counted) and they rotate through field positions for the entire game (unless a coach has safety concerns with a player fielding a certain position such as 1st base or pitcher’s assistant).
Skill Building Goals: Players will learn the basics of baseball—the rules and core skills, including proper batting stance, fielding and throwing mechanics, and base-running, all with an emphasis on fun.
